The popular antibiotic Cipro, made by Bayer, has been linked to an increased risk of tendon ruptures, tendonitis, and other serious injuries in users. The prescription drug, commonly used to treat infections throughout the body, is a member of the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics and can also lead to difficulty breathing, swelling of the face and neck, and hives.
Cipro, which garnered widespread media attention following the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States as a drug the government kept stockpiled to combat exposure to deadly anthrax, is more commonly prescribed for the treatment of urinary tract infections, ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and some sexually transmitted diseases, among other conditions.
If you or a loved one has been injured by Cipro or another brand of fluoroquinolone antibiotic, you may have legal rights. Injured parties may be eligible to be financially compensated for their medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages, and other damages. Contact Mark & Associates, P.C. today for a free legal consultation and evaluation of your possible case by completing the case submission form on this page, or by calling 1-866-50-RIGHTS (1-866-507-4448).
Hundreds of Cipro users have suffered painful tendon ruptures and tendonitis, particularly in the shoulder, hand, and Achilles tendon in the foot. Tendons are cords of tissue that join muscles and bones and are essential in movement. In some cases, the injuries require surgery to repair the tendon followed by physical therapy. Other injuries associated with Cipro and similar antibiotics include shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing, and swelling of the neck and face.
In July 2008, the Food and Drug Administration ordered a prominent “Black Box” warning be placed on the packaging of Cipro and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics to warn users of the risk of tendon ruptures and tendonitis. The agency action was prompted by hundreds of reports of patient injuries.
